Dehradun: Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan on Monday directed officials to speed up eco-tourism initiatives and promote sustainable tourism while creating livelihood opportunities for local communities.

He instructed the Forest Department to prepare a state trekking policy and place it before the Cabinet by August. Officials were also asked to open new trekking peaks after completing necessary approvals and expedite environmental audits.

The Chief Secretary directed that all bookings for trekking sites, mountaineering, tourist destinations, and forest rest houses under the Forest Department be shifted online to improve visitor management and prevent overbooking.

He also set an October deadline for launching nine eco-tourism sites on the Jabar Khet model and starting a Nature Guide Training Centre with a certification course. Officials were further asked to submit a plan for operating 31 trekking sites, eco-camps, and eco-hubs, while strengthening the Forest Development Corporation.
