Researchers from the Indian Botanical Survey, based in Kolkata`s Central National Herbarium, have made an exciting discovery of five new species of wild mushrooms in different districts of Uttarakhand.

Although these mushrooms are not safe to eat, they are incredibly valuable for environmental science and medicine. Their discovery has shed light on the rich biodiversity of the Uttarakhand region. Dr. Kanad Das, a well-known mycologist, led a team of seven scientists in this discovery, and their findings were published in the prestigious scientific journal `Scientific Reports` on an international level.

Before this, the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) discovered lichens in Uttarakhand`s Govind Wildlife Sanctuary and Gangotri National Park in the Uttarkashi district.

Even though mushrooms and fungi may not seem important, they play a crucial role in medicine. Mushrooms have contributed to the development of life-saving medicines like penicillin for preventing infections and streptomycin for tuberculosis. Additionally, the interconnected roots of large fungi and trees help in the growth and development of plants and trees. The scientists studied over 40 different mushroom species as part of their research.

This discovery is a significant step forward in understanding and preserving the biodiversity of the Himalayan region.
